What if your spouse isn't military? Can they still qualify?

By Glenn Wegner, Lone Star Realty, Keller, TX Last reviewed: October 6, 2026

Your spouse doesn't need to be a veteran to be part of the purchase with you. The VA benefit is tied to your service, and your lender will review both of your incomes and credit if you apply together. Whether a non-veteran co-borrower changes anything about the down payment depends on how the loan is set up, so confirm with your lender before you plan around it. Surviving spouses of certain veterans have their own eligibility, which VA lists separately. It's important to understand your spousal benefits and whether a VA loan can be used with or without the veteran, and I can help you sort through the details. Again, a lender who knows VA loans well is key. I work with several experienced VA lenders and can introduce you, and you're free to choose any lender you like.
