What documents do you need to apply for a mortgage?

Lenders typically ask for recent pay stubs, two years of W-2s or tax returns, two months of bank statements, a photo ID, and details on your debts and assets. Self-employed borrowers usually need more. W-2s and tax returns are what most often delay a file, because the lender needs them to move forward. Your lender will give you their exact list for your loan type, and it can change as your file moves along. Keep copies handy, and don't pack them during a move.
