Can you pay off your mortgage early?

By Glenn Wegner, Lone Star Realty, Keller, TX Last reviewed: October 6, 2026

Usually yes, by paying extra toward principal or paying off the whole loan. Some loans have prepayment terms, and your Loan Estimate shows whether yours does, so check before you sign. If you pay extra, ask your servicer to apply it to principal. I suggest extra payments when you can comfortably afford them. If extra payments don't fit in your budget, that's a good sign to revisit the budget before you buy.
