Can you get a VA loan if you're currently on active duty?

By Glenn Wegner, Lone Star Realty, Keller, TX Last reviewed: October 6, 2026

Yes. If you're on active duty with at least 90 continuous days of service, you can qualify for a VA loan, and you don't have to wait until you retire. The loan has to be for a home you'll live in as your residence. Your lender will confirm eligibility with a Certificate of Eligibility, which I explain in the COE answer. Build extra time into your moving plan for the VA appraisal, and use a lender who does VA loans often so you avoid speed bumps. I can introduce you to lenders who fit your situation, and you're free to choose any lender you like.
