How much should you save for emergencies after buying?

By Glenn Wegner, Lone Star Realty, Keller, TX Last reviewed: October 6, 2026

I advise my clients to set aside money for repairs, taxes, and unforeseen circumstances. I recommend a minimum of three months of financial cushion, with six months being optimal. The right amount depends on your income, job stability, and the age and condition of the home. I'm not a financial advisor, and a financial professional can advise you on your own situation.
